Designer's Showcase Meet the Artist ... Gary Ljostad Gary's first introduction to woodturning was at the Yale University Art Gallery in 2002. On display was a show called “Woodturning in North America since 1930.” Gary was exposed to the work of Ed Moulthrup, Jack Straka, Alan Stirt, David Ellsworth, Dell Stubbs, Dale Nish, Rude Osolnik, John Jordon, Jerry Glaser, and many, many other wonderful turners. His head was spinning by the time he left the show. By January 2003, Gary had his first lathe—an inexpensive machine from Harbor Freight. After six months, he gave that first lathe to someone else just starting out and bought himself a better one. Gary also has a small lathe that he uses for teaching. He is now entering his sixth year of woodturning. Gary welcomes your questions and comments, and can be reached by e-mail at gljostad@optonline.net. |
