Chainsaw carving

I think I'm in the wrong forum! Anyhow, if there are any chainsaw carvers out there, here's some questions. After a live tree is cut down, how long is it advisable to let the stump stand before chainsaw carving a critter? What actions are best to help it dry out? What type of preservative/finish for long-term beauty is best for that type of carving?
