What Lathe do you use?

Postby Fred Reinfeld » Sat Oct 29, 2005 3:02 pm

I use a Craftsman Tube bed 12" X 37" lathe circa 1983. It has served me well for what I do. Many household restorations have been completed including balusters in a house in Minneapolis built in 1912, try finding those at Home Depot. Many bowls have been turned with an original Nova Chuck, where I have to say that acesssory items for this lathe are scarce. The most entertaining project recently was a kitchen island with six 6"x6"x36" Character White Oak legs. This grade of oak has knots and checks that throw the center of density off the center of the post and when I fired up the first time the drawers of the bench opened up and the whole mess started walking across the floor like an unbalanced washing machine.

What kind of lathe

Postby Barry Craven » Mon Oct 31, 2005 7:02 pm

Hi Fred, I also own a tube lathe 12"x37" made by the Ridge tool co.,the spindle was 3/4"x16" so accessories were not a problem, I had this lathe in my shop for a year before I started to use it on a regular basis because of a couple of bad catches, but after overcoming that it has served me well. After using it for two years I also acquired a DVR3000 which I like very much and allows me to turn larger items, this is a terrific craft and I never would have imagined I could become so involved,my tube bed is now used for my Beall buffing system.
