bought 1/2 of a craftsman 15" lathe from a place that sells reman. tool
just the power head but im sure i can build a stand to use it as a bowl lathe scince thats my primary intrest anyway head cost me 125 bucks
about 150 for steel so under 300 can spin bowls up to 20" also it has the same spindle size as my jet 1236 so all my chucks and face plates fit

james
it might take a minute to do it the safe way ,
but it can take a long time to heal from doing it the other way

DVR lathe

Postby Matt Wimpee » Tue Jul 25, 2006 5:55 am

Morning Tim,

Congrats on your DVR. It will spoil you with some of its features and there is only one thing you need to watch. Just under the drive spur you will see a slot that gives the motor a little breathing room and on the back side is the area where the air comes out. every so often you need to simply blow air thru there to clear any sanding dust from the sensor.

I only had to open my DVR once to wipe my finger across the little sensor that reads the speed. Actually blowing the dust out is only part of normal maintenance but, they forgot to mention it in the manual. If you have not done so already you can download a complete manual from teknatool web site

I have used a DVR for several years and love it. I bought a General last year only because I could drop the speed to anything from zero up. Now the DVR XP drops to 100 rpm.

I still use the DVR When I can get my wife to step back. It is the smoothest lathe I have ever used and we currently have 5 different brands sitting in the shop.

congrats and have fun with it.

I started with an Edison bench top years back until I burned the motor up.
I let the hobby sit for a number of years and just in the last 3 months bought a Sears Craftsman 15 inch swivel head lathe with all the dressings.

I simply love it...quiet and adjustable.

This is my first post. As a high school shop teacher, I have turned for years on two old rockwell/delta lathe's I have in my school shop. I just bought a oneway 1640 and have been turning on it for around 3 weeks. It is a very nice machine. Hollowing a bowl on the out board side is so nice. :D I bought the lathe to use in my retirement that is getting closer.

Congrats, Jack, on buying a great lathe and I know you will enjoy it! I am sure you are enjoying getting to turn things just for you - especially after teaching others for a long time!

I'm new to this forum, in fact this is my second post.

I started on a Jet 1236, that's long gone now.

I have a Vicmarc VL300 3 hp shortbed
A Vicmarc VL100 which I purchased about 18 months back from Rude Osolnik's estate sale
My third lathe is an old Rockwell-Delta 46-210 gap bed built in Tupelo in 1971. I purchased this a few months back and I'm "restoring" it, new bearings, paint, etc.

Sounds like you have some good iron in both lathes. I would like to upgrade but I can't seem to make up my mind as to which one I want. Everytime I think I've decided I read or hear somenthing and then start to waver.

Hi all, I at the moment have 6 lathes, nothing fancy, Yet. lol I have an old Delta 1460 , 16 speeds with TONS of the original accessories I recieved from my father in law and pretty much never used, then I turned 1 pen at Rockler. I bought a Jet mini on ebay with a set of HSS tools and other supplies, I then bought a Delta 46-700 for the VS, then a week later a Jet 1236 came along with a set of Sorbys, Then a Jet 1442 came my way about a month or so later with lots of accessories Sorbys, a Talon chuck, lots of wood blanks ect. ect. and I bought a Delta (homecraft) 11 swing from 1955 just for a few of the accessories that it had to add to the Delta 1460 from 1947.(I even have the original manual and the original warrenty card for it.) The Jet mini now has the Beall 3 on a tree mounted on it , and I need to sell off 3 of the lathes at some point. But I use the Jet 1442 as my main lathe now. I have collected alot of tools to use . Now I just need tons of PRACTICE.

Re: What Lathe do you use?

Postby Wood Raptor » Fri Aug 15, 2008 4:56 pm

Well if your a new kid to the Forum; this seems to be a nice place to get started.

I am presently turning on a 3520 B Powermatic.

It is the smoothest lathe I've ever used, except for a Oneway a friend let me give a spin. Alas my wife forbade the expence of the Oneway. I didn't like the lathe control bar moving around and the shear bulk of the unit. Maybe if I owned a blimp hanger in NJ for a shop. In the end she was happy I saved all that money and got the P. M.

My shop is not huge, but it's not small either. I beleive one of the most important aspects of turning is being able to move around your lathe. It should not be jamed into a corner or placed against a wall. As my mentor would say "leave yourself room to dance with your turning."

I started nine years ago with a Harbor Frieght nightmare, then a Shop Smith, then Craftsmen, then Delta. You might as well jump in and get what you want. It releaves frustration and improves your learning curve. Not to mention having to chase your lathe around, whenever your turning an out of balance piece of wood.

It's true, one should beleive in the "Gold Standard."
