Woodturning Design Projects Supply Lists
Below you will find the supply lists for the projects featured in the Winter 2008 (#16) issue of Woodturning Design.
Project Name Supplies
Antique Lace Bobbins

Tools: Lathe with assorted chisels, shop-made drive center, dividers, small half-round and rat tail file, mini-drill and bit, and needle nose pliers.

Supplies:

1/2” x 1/2” x 5” maple,
brass wire,
assorted beads and buttons,
nylon fishing line,
assorted grits of  abrasive paper,
friction polish or finish of choice.

Faux Ornamental Turned Box Tools: Lathe with assorted chisels, index wheel, router with carriage, 1/4” and 1/2” cove bits, router sled, drill chuck and 3/8” Forstner bit.

Supplies:

3” square x 6” long ash for box
3/4” x 2-1/2” square purpleheart for lid
5/8” square x 2” ash for knob
3/8” diameter x 1/4” purpleheart for plug
Assorted grits of abrasive paper
Finish of choice
Buffing wheel

Shopmade Outboard Tool Rest Stand   Tools: 2 pipe wrenches, drill, taps, metal cutting saw, this can be as simple as a hack saw or, if available, a metal cutting bandsaw which will make cutting much easier.

Supplies:
1” ID galvanized water pipe in the following lengths:
            2 pieces - 2’ long, threaded on both ends
            1 piece – 3’ long, threaded on both ends
1 – 1” galvanized water pipe “T”
1 – 1” galvanized water pipe flange
1-1/4” galvanized water pipe in the following lengths:
            2 pieces – 2’ long, threaded on both ends
            1 – 1-1/4” galvanized water pipe 90° elbow
1 piece of 1/2” thick steel plate, 8” square
4 – Knobs with threaded studs
2 – Lag bolts or bolts and nuts, depending on lathe attachment.

Shop-Built Bottle Stopper Chuck Tools: Lathe, bandsaw, 6”or 8” bench grinder, scroll chuck with spigot jaws or drill chuck with appropriately sized Morse taper, “V”-sized (0.3770) twist drill bit, cross cut sled with adjustable stop, pen blank drilling jig, and wooden mallet.

Materials:

4” length of 3/8” diameter steel rod
assorted grits of abrasive paper
Steel wool
Magic marker
Thick Cyanoacrylate glue (CA or super glue)
Q-tip
Renaissance wax or finish of choice

Spiral Wire Ornament Wire for Globe:
(www.McMaster.com, 1/4 lb, #8870K13 @ $2.62 and #8904K71 @ $6.77 as of 5/23/07).

Tools & Materials:

Wire
Turning Square, 1” x 1” x 6-3/4”
Spindle roughing gouge, detail gouge, parting tool, 1/2” skew, mini-cove tool, narrow parting tool, pin chuck, spiraling hook, 180 and 320 grit abrasive, and 3M 7448 non-woven pad

Table Coaster Tools: Lathe with screw center faceplate, re-ground square nose scraper, small spindle gouge, ruler straight edge, spear point chisel (optional) and a 1/2” skew.

Materials:

Wood: 7/8” X 6-1/2” diameter, walnut
Cork: 1/8” X 2-3/4” diameter
Bees wax
Glue

(3) 10" length of 1/2" metal rod
(3) 1/8" Allen wrench
(3) 8-32 set screw

Tools Needed:
3 hollowing tools (The ones we just made)
Skew
Bowl gouge

Segmented Pen Supplies Needed:
Wood of choice
Pen kit of your choice either from Arizona Silhouette or Craft Supply USA.
Sanding material of choice
Finish of choice.  I use EEE Cream & Behlen’s Woodturners Finish
Abralon Sanding pads
Urethane Glue & spring clamps
4” wide masking tape or packaging tape
Medium and thin cyanoacrylate glue (CA or Superglue)

Tools Needed: Planer, table saw, spring clamps, ruler, drill press with appropriate drill bit, drill centering jig, pen mandrel with appropriate bushings, disc sander, and a lathe with skew chisel or small gouge.
