Below you will find the supply lists for the projects featured in the Summer 2007 (#14) issue of Woodturning Design.

WINE RACK:

Wood: Hardwood: two pieces about 1” x 5-1/2” x 15” for end pieces; matching hardwood: one piece 1” x 1” x 5” turning square for buttons; pine: one piece about half of a 5/4” x 6” x 8” for filler wood.

Tools:
Lathe; bandsaw; scroll saw; jointer; planer or sander; mini-beading tool; drill with assorted bits including masonry bits; bowl gouge; parting tool; pyramid point tool, shear scraper; spindle turning tools for buttons; vise; straight edge; 6” putty knife; mallet, and a compass.

Materials:
Two plain bricks, wood screws, 1/2” cross pin dowels, hot-melt glue gun and glue or tile adhesive, assorted grits of abrasive paper, finish of choice, thin cardboard, masking tape and a pencil or marker.

MAKING A BOX FROM SPALTED WOOD:

Wood: Spalted wood of choice, 3-1/2” diameter X 3” high and softwood for waste block and jam chuck.

Tools:
Bandsaw, lathe, narrow kerf parting tool, scroll chuck, 3/8” gouge, swan neck scraper*, square nose scraper, “figure 8” calipers, skew, depth gauge, brush, diamond file, dust mask, and Vernier calipers.

Materials:
Cyanoacrylate glue, lacquer sanding sealer and thinner, assorted grits of abrasive paper, “J” backed cloth paper, 3M white pad, finish of choice, soft wax, paper towels, facial tissue.

ASSEMBLING CONES INTO A SPHERE:

Wood: 3/4” Baltic birch plywood, block of scrap wood, and a small tapered stick or dowel.

Tools:
Compass, bandsaw, drill press with small twist drill bit and Forstner bit, C-clamp, lathe with live center and 4-jawed chuck, assorted lathe chisels, calipers, tools to shape metal templates, shop made slotted sanding mandrel, and a Dremel sanding cone.

Materials
: 3/4” acrylic rod, 16d common nail, metal for templates, 2” thick Styrofoam, cyanoacrylate glue, caulking adhesive, assorted grits of abrasive paper, polishing compound, finish of choice, and tape.

INLAYED PENS:

Wood: Maple or wood of choice: 1 piece 3/4” square x 7” pen blank; purpleheart or wood of choice for inlays; scrap plywood.

Tools:
Lathe and assorted turning tools, “flat top” saw blade, table saw, shop-made pen sled with angle accessories and clamps, shop-made thin strip sled, thickness gauge, shooting board, shoulder or block plane, utility knife, straight edge, pen mandrel and required bushings and compound miter saw.

Materials:
Slimline pen kit, medium cyanoacrylate glue, double stick tape, assorted grits of abrasive paper, and finish of choice.

Wood: 5” x 12” block of wood, 3/4” plywood for jig, thin contrasting wood or veneer for strips.

Tools:
Lathe, 4-jawed chuck, hollowing system, large Forstner bit, table saw, steady rest, small Black and Decker “Bullet” drill, rotary tool with small circular saw cutter and drum sander, two pairs needlenose pliers, and bandsaw with narrow blade

Materials:
Small screws, wood glue, thin cyanoacrylate glue (superglue or CA), black CA, spray adhesive, craft stick, double stick tape, paper for pattern, carpenter’s pencil or dull pencil, and flexible flashlight (optional).

Wood: Hardwood: 1 piece 5/4” (1-1/4”) x 3” x 3” for whorl; contrasting straight-grained hardwood: 1 piece 1” x 1” x 7” for spin shaft.

Tools:
Mini-lathe, scroll chuck and basic turning tools, bandsaw, drill press with a 5/8” Forstner bit, compass, ruler and pencil.

Materials:
Two large rubber bands, 10” long piece of No. 12 or No. 14 insulated copper electrical wire, yellow carpenter’s glue, assorted grits of abrasives, finish of choice.
