Hardwood:  8” X 11” or size to fit your sketchbook. Contrasting hardwood for 3” inlay. Pine for filler wood for backup plate.

Tools: Lathe, bandsaw, 4-jawed chuck, flat wooden faceplate, drill, bowl gouge, calipers, scraper, pyramid point tool, parting tool, clamps with protective pads, drum sander, vise, triangular file, ruler, and a 6” putty knife.

Materials: Wood glue, hot-melt glue gun with extra glue sticks, assorted grits of abrasive paper, friction finish of choice, masking tape, pencil, tile adhesive, and a “fake” credit card.

Kallenshaan Woods Piano Kit*
Pen kit of choice**

Tools:  Drill press with required drill bit and drill centering device, barrel trimmer, lathe, roughing gouge, skew or Spindlemaster, pen blank squaring jig, mandrel with appropriate bushings, and pen press.

Materials:  Abrasive material of choice, Abralon sanding pads***, EEE cream, Behlens Woodturners Finish or finish of choice, thin and medium cyanoacrylate glue, lint-free rag (cheesecloth), and paper towel.

ON THE LATHE

Wood:  Your leftovers are best.

Tools (some of which you will have to make yourself): Lathe, 4-jawed scroll chuck with pin jaws or spigot jaws that will close to 1/2”, 1/2” or 3/8” spindle gouge with a narrow tip, any size roughing gouge, fine cutoff tool homemade from a hacksaw blade or saber saw blade, assorted homemade tiny scrapers from hex wrenches and screwdrivers, electric drill or drill chuck with assorted bits, bench grinder, vise grip pliers, propane torch, small hand stone or diamond file, curved surgical clamp (hemostat*), coat hanger wire thickness gauges, and a pencil.

Materials:  Dowel, soda straws, small pieces of sanding cloth or abrasive paper, paper towel, carnuba wax, shellac, or finish of choice, masking tape, and either alcohol or acetone.

Wood:  Hardwood block--3” X 3” X appropriate length; hardwood block for spigot chuck.

Tools:  Lathe with assorted chisels, including parting tool, spindle roughing gouge, spindle gouge, 4-jawed chuck, drill chuck with 7mm bit, 1-1/16” Forstner bit with extension, 1-5/8” Forstner bit, calipers, hand drill with 3/32” bit revolving cone center, hand saw, and a small rule.

Materials:  Appropriate size peppermill mechanism*, Assorted grits of abrasive paper, finish of choice, paste wax, face shield (important!) gloves (recommended)

Wood:  Appropriate size dry straight-grained hardwood, scrap wood.

Tools:  Lathe with scroll-chuck and No. 2 jaws, bandsaw, 1/16” narrow kerf parting tool, spindle/roughing gouge, skew chisels, square nose scrapers, Jacobs chuck with assorted drill bits, drum sander, inside and outside calipers, depth gauge, bench vise or padded clamp, compass, straight edge and a razor saw.

Materials:  Assorted grits of abrasive paper, hot melt glue, paste wax, Danish oil or finish of choice, masking tape, double stick tape, freezer, tea kettle, pencil and a paper towel tube (optional).

Wood:  Big leaf maple or wood of choice, waste  wood for creating jam chuck.

Tools:  Bandsaw, bowl templates, drill press with 1-78” Forstner bit, screw chuck, live center, assorted lathe chisels, including bowl gouges, round nose scraper, parting/beading tool, depth gauge, electric drill and 5/64” bit, Oneway Drill Wizard drilling jig, indexing wheel* and curved calipers.

Materials:  Ponderosa pine needles, artificial sinew of waxed linen and tapestry needle, shellac, assorted grits of abrasive paper, 3/0 steel wool, Beall buffing system (optional).
