FLIP FLOP TOP

MATERIALS NEEDED
Wood:
3" square x 4" long, ambrosia maple and one ebony pen blank

Hardware:
1--2-1/8" long eyebolt
1--1/8" x 3/4" rare earth magnet
1--old Dremel bit shaft or a nail
Assorted abrasive paper
Cyanoacrylate glue
Friction polish or finish of choice

TOOLS NEEDED
Lathe with assorted chisels
Scroll chuck
Jacob's chuck with 1/8", 9/32" bits and a 3/4" Forstner bit
Dremel tool with a grinding bit

1/8” x 1/2” parting tool to modify
Scrap 2 x 4 construction lumber for sharpening jig
Round ceramic magnet (1/4” to 1/2”)

TOOLS NEEDED
Protractor for marking 45° angle
Angle grinder with cut-off disc
Bench grinder with sliding V-block or other sharpening system
Drill press with Forstner bit to match magnet

Plastic Template: Make a clear acrylic template 1/8” to 1/4” thick with an outside diameter of 3 1/4”, and a 1/4” diameter hole in the center. I turned mine from scrap available at a variety of sources. Try your local hardware or glass store for small pieces of plastic.

HUT Turners Finish: available from Woodcraft, Craft Supply, Packard, and Pen Turning catalogs. The Deft Oil shown was purchased at a local paint store and it is very similar to Watco Oil.

MAKING A SIMPLE VACUUM CHUCK

MATERIALS NEEDED
One piece of furniture grade plywood, 3/4" x 7" square and one piece, 4" square.
The large nut can be purchased from suppliers such Enco, MSC or McMaster.
The sealed bearing can be purchased at your local big box store, an automotive supply store or at Enco.
The 3/8" by 30" lamp rod can also be purchased at your local big box store as can the 4" PVC coupler and the epoxy glue.
1/8" Foam sheet can be purchased at your local craft supply store. One brand name is "Foamies".

TOOLS NEEDED
Table saw
Ruler
Drill press with a 2-1/8" Forstner bit (or to fit)
Chisel (optional)
Bandsaw
Lathe with a parting tool, skew, and gouge
4-jawed chuck with pin jaws

PLYWOOD STEADY REST

MATERIALS NEEDED
Wood:
3/4" x either 4' x 4' or 4' x 8' plywood: either Baltic birch or golden viola are suggested.

Screws:
20 each, 1-1/2" X #6 wood or coarse thread drywall screws.
10 each, 1-1/4" X #6 wood or coarse thread drywall screws.

Bolts:
3 each, 5/16" x 3" long carriage bolts.
3 each, 5/16" wing nuts.
3 each, 5/16" flat washers.

Other Bolts:
3 each, hex head bolts, 5/16" x 2-1/2" long.
3 each, 5/16" stop nuts w/nylon inserts.
2 each, 5/16" x 1-5/8" long carriage bolts.
2 each, 5/16" flat washers.

Miscellaneous:
2 each 5/16" threaded knobs.
